Gold Coast Qld
(Pop 550 000)
The Gold Coast is an immensely popular tourist
destination situated in
S-E Qld. It stretches from Logan City (north) to
Coolangatta
(south) on the NSW border, a distance of about 70 km
and is only 100 km south of Brisbane. This
beautiful subtropical city is the second most
populous in Qld, 6th in Australia and famous for its
surfing beaches, high-rise skyline, nightlife,
shopping & endless tourist attractions. European
settlement began in mid 1800s with cedar cutters and
later Southport developed into a secluded holiday
destination for affluent Brisbane residents. The name
‘Gold Coast’ is thought to have been coined by
journalists and real estate developers to describe
this vastly growing tourist region. The suburbs of
Southport &
Surfers Paradise form the Gold Coast’s commercial
centre. Formerly wetlands and swamps, the land
between the coastal strip and hinterland has been
turned into man-made waterways and artificial islands
comprising an area of more than 9 times that of
Venice, Italy and covered in upmarket homes. Apart
from tourism, property services, retail,
construction, finance & insurance, education,
business services and entertainment (including a
growing film production industry) all play a vital
role in the area’s economy. The beautiful hinterland
region includes Tamborine
Mountain (36 km n-w) and Lamington NP (73 km
s-w). Magic Millions Racing Carnival (Jan), Blues
Music Festival (May), Wintersun Festival (June), Gold
Coast Marathon (July), Gold Coast Show (Aug), Indy
300 (Oct), Australian Music Week (Nov).
